The Lottery

Title of Selection: The Lottery

Author: Shirley Jackson

Date Read: 10.28.08

Pre-Reading: What is Justice? List traditions you have within your family.

Justice is when a wrong is remedied into what is fair.

A tradition in my family is when my sister and I make fun of my little brother & then my parents get upset with us. It pretty much happens every day J

Plot/Reaction: Describe the community/town in this short story. What happened to Mrs, Hutchinson? Why?

The community in the short story is very strict when it comes to keeping traditions alive. People seem to come into understanding until they are the ones in the situation so I think all the people are hypocrites and scared to stand up for the whole population. The town itself seems peaceful though.

Mrs. Hutchinson gets stoned at the end because she was chosen as the “winner” of the lottery.

Questions: How/Why did the lottery start?

Quotes: “Chips of wood, Mr. Summers had argued, had been all very well when the village was tiny, but now that population was more than 300 and likely to keep on growing, it was necessary to use something that would fit more easily into the black box.”
